Works Extent
This project aims to improve the public realm and access in and around the medieval core of the city. This includes access to Bishop Lucey Park, Elizabeth Fort, St. Fin Barre's Cathedral and the proposed new Event Centre on the site of the former Beamish & Crawford Brewery. As part of the scheme, Bishop Lucey Park will be renewed based on an award-winning architectural design by Hall Mc Knight Architects that will open up the park to the wider city centre.
Objectives
This project consists of:
- The provision of public realm improvements to the streets and existing bridges including South Main Street, Tobin Street, Tuckey Street, South Gate Bridge, Proby’s Quay, Frenches Quay, Crosses Green, Clarkes Bridge and Wandesford Quay;
- Two new pedestrian bridges linking Crosses’ Green to Lamley's Lane and Frenches Quay to the site for the New Event Centre will be provided;
- Remedial repairs and vegetation removal from the quay walls along Frenches Quay, Proby’s Quay and Crosses Green will be provided.
Timeline
Bishop Lucey Park was completed and officially opened in November 2025.
The wider Beamish & Crawford Quarter public realm renewal is due for completion in Q4 2026.
