Cork Age Friendly City Programme
What is an Age Friendly City?
An Age Friendly city is a place where older people are supported to stay living in their own homes and communities, lead healthy and active lives, get to where they want to go when they want to go, and are valued contributors to the lives of their communities.
Cork Age Friendly City Programme
The goal of an Age Friendly City is to ensure older people are supported to stay living in their own homes and communities, lead healthy and active lives, get to where they want to go, when they want to go, and are valued contributors to their communities.
Cork was designated an Age Friendly City in April of 2019 and received a World Health Organisation (WHO) Charter on December 16, 2019.
The objectives of the Cork City Age Friendly programme are to:
- Increase the participation of older people in the social, economic and cultural life of the community for everybody’s benefit.
- Improve the health and well-being of older people in the city.
- Demonstrate how services and supports for older people can be made more responsive, caring, professional and accessible, through partnership.
Cork Older People's Council (OPC)
The OPC brings the voice of older people into local government; informing private and public service provision. The membership meets 6 times a year and consists of individuals and those representing older people’s groups. The OPC works with high level stakeholders via The Age Friendly Alliance to deliver on the aims of the current Age Friendly Strategy 2025 - 2029.
The group informs national policy issues through the National Age Friendly Ireland structure. Members of the OPC contribute to the decision-making processes that may affect their lives by helping to co-design solutions in response to barriers and challenges facing older people.
Age Friendly Public Forum Meetings
Older people in Cork are invited to come together, hear from interesting speakers, share common concerns, ideas and experiences four times a year. Events are quarterly, free and inclusive; upcoming dates are circulated via the Community Newsletter.
The Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme
This programme supports older adults to remain living in their own homes and communities by providing one-to-one support for older people and their families by linking them to services aimed at improving older peoples living conditions, access to continued health and social care supports. Referrals for this service may be made via the national office on 046-9248899.
