Dagur B. Eggertsson, M.D.

Dagur B. Eggertsson, M.D., has been a Member of the Icelandic Parliament since 2024, following ten years as Mayor of Reykjavík (2014–2024).

He currently chairs the Icelandic delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, serves as vice-chair of Parliament’s Budget Committee, and focuses on climate change, housing and international affairs. Dagur trained and worked as a physician and holds a master’s degree in Human Rights and International Law from Lund University, Sweden. He was first elected to Reykjavík City Council in 2002 and served as vice-chair of Iceland’s Social Democratic Alliance from 2009 to 2013. As Mayor, Dagur was active in international city networks and succeeded Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo as Chair of the OECD Champion Mayors for Inclusive Growth initiative. His work in Reykjavík placed particular emphasis on climate action, sustainable urban development, housing, planning, inequality, prevention, public health and the transformation of public space.  He is the author of four books, including New Reykjavík: The Transformation of a Young City (2021).
