Dr .Tony Holohan - Director of the UCD One Health Centre.

Dr Tony Holohan is Director of the UCD One Health Centre, a WHO Collaborating Centre for One Health, and Adjunct Full Professor of Public Health at University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin.

He served as Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer from 2008 to 2022, leading the national public health response to COVID-19 and helping shape reforms in health policy, prevention and patient safety. He was a principal architect of Healthy Ireland, Ireland’s national framework for improving health and wellbeing, with its emphasis on action across government and society to address the conditions that shape health. His current work advances a One Health approach, recognising the interdependence of human, animal, plant and ecosystem health. He focuses on translating this understanding into practical changes in governance, investment and accountability, bringing together disciplines and sectors that too often work separately. Tony chairs An Taisce’s One Health Committee and is a member of the European Union’s Advisory Committee on Public Health Emergencies. He has a particular interest in how cities can improve health and reduce inequalities through climate action, nature restoration, sustainable food systems and active travel, and in how political leadership can turn shared ambitions into measurable benefits for communities and the ecosystems on which they depend.
