Dr. Dean Venables - Senior Lecturer, University College Cork.

Dr Dean Venables is a Senior Lecturer in environmental and physical chemistry at University College Cork.

His research interests include air quality, low-cost sensors, and developing spectroscopic instruments to detect trace gases and aerosols. His current projects focus on stationary and mobile monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on city streets, air quality in train stations, and agricultural releases of ammonia. His research group also use low-cost sensors to understand the spatial and temporal characteristics of air pollution. He is a member of the Climate and Health Alliance and contributed to its recent position paper on improving air quality in Ireland. Dean has also been involved in cycling advocacy for the last decade and served as the chair of Cork Cycling Campaign from 2018-2020. He is excited by the potential of active travel (especially cycling) to bring multiple benefits to cities. These benefits include the public health benefits of greater physical activity, lower air and noise pollution, better utilisation of public spaces, reduced traffic congestion, lower climate emissions, and greater economic resilience in our communities.
