City Fire Brigade Bringing Safety and Fun to Summer Show

17/06/2026

Cork City Fire Brigade will be out in force at this year’s Cork Summer Show, bringing a lively, family-friendly display that mixes hands-on fun with important fire safety advice. Visitors can call in to meet their local firefighters and explore a dedicated Community Fire Safety Vehicle, along with a wide range of operational equipment. There will be demonstrations of specialist gear used in emergencies, including Road Traffic Collision (RTC) equipment, Breathing Apparatus, and water rescue gear, giving people a real insight into the work carried out every day by the brigade.
The Lord Mayor, Cllr Fergal Dennehy said, “I am delighted to support Cork City Fire Brigades message of fire safety, and I would encourage everyone to visit Cork City Fire Brigade when they are at the Cork Summer Show. Cork City Fire Brigade preform an essential service for the city, and I am eternally grateful for their service.”
While there is plenty to see, a big part of the day is about sharing simple fire safety messages that can make a real difference at home. Firefighters will be chatting to visitors about checking smoke alarms, having a clear escape plan, and keeping doors closed at night to slow the spread of fire.
The advice is straightforward but important: Get out, Stay out, and Call the Fire Brigade
People are also reminded to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and to know their Eircode, helping crews get to them as quickly as possible.

There will also be a focus on everyday risks, including the growing issue of charging devices in the home, particularly those using lithium-ion batteries such as e-scooters and e-bikes. Firefighters will highlight the dangers of overloading sockets, charging devices overnight, and the increased fire risk if these batteries are damaged, overcharged or used with incorrect chargers. Simple steps like using the right charger, avoiding overcharging, and keeping an eye out for damaged batteries can greatly reduce the risk.

Kitchen fire safety will also feature, with reminders not to leave cooking unattended and to have basic safety equipment like fire blankets and fire extinguishers at home, and to know how to use them. A/Senior Executive Fire Officer Cormac O’Shea said:
”The aim is to connect with the public in an engaging and practical way. We want to show both sides of what we do, not just responding to emergencies but helping to prevent them in the first place. Events like the Cork Summer Show are a fantastic opportunity to meet people, have a chat and share simple advice that can help keep families safe.”
Younger visitors are very much part of the experience. Children can try on fire gear, take photos with firefighters, and even have a go using a training fire extinguisher under supervision. Fire-themed colouring books and keyrings will also be available, helping to make learning about fire safety fun and memorable.
With a mix of live demonstrations, interactive displays and easy-to-follow safety tips, Cork City Fire Brigade is encouraging everyone attending the show to stop by, say hello and take away a few life-saving reminders.
