Cork Learning City
Cork Learning City is a proud UNESCO Learning City committed to making learning accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone. Through our partnerships across communities, education providers, and public bodies, we celebrate and promote lifelong learning as a powerful driver of wellbeing, opportunity, and social inclusion.
At the heart of this mission is the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival, an annual week‑long celebration with hundreds of free events - workshops, walks, talks, classes, performances, and more - the festival invites people of all ages and interests to Investigate, Participate, Celebrate. Every year, organisations and individuals across the city come together to showcase learning in all its forms, fostering creativity, connection, and community spirit.
Cork Learning City also supports the growth of Learning Neighbourhoods - local areas committed to promoting lifelong learning through collaboration and community action. Beginning in 2015 with Ballyphehane and Knocknaheeny, the programme has expanded to eight neighbourhoods across the city, strengthening Cork’s culture of learning from the ground up. This work is led by a steering group involving Cork City Council, UCC, MTU, and Cork ETB.
Another key initiative, the Cork Access Network, brings partners together to tackle educational disadvantage and improve access to learning opportunities citywide. Chaired by former CIT President Dr. Barry O’Connor, this group works with organisations, institutions, and communities to identify challenges and co‑create practical solutions that ensure no learner is left behind.
Each year, Cork Learning City also hosts the Cork Celebrates Lifelong Learning Awards, recognising inspiring learners, educators, and community groups. From youth creativity to grassroots activism, these awards shine a light on the diverse “Kaleidoscope of Learning” that makes Cork a vibrant, inclusive learning city.
