Capwell Community Celebrates 100 Years with Special Street Party
20/05/2026
Residents of the Capwell community in Turners Cross are coming together to celebrate a major milestone as Capwell marks 100 years since the development of one of the Irish Free State’s earliest and most significant social housing schemes. The community-led celebration, titled Capwell 100, will take place on Sunday, May 24th from 2p.m. to 4.p.m. Capwell Road will be transformed into a vibrant pedestrian-friendly space for an afternoon of music, games, history, food and family activities.
Originally established in 1926, the Capwell housing scheme represented a pioneering step toward modern, high-quality public housing in Cork city. Organisers say the event has been designed to welcome current and former residents, extended families, neighbours and the wider Cork community. “This celebration is about recognising the unique history of Capwell while also celebrating the strong sense of community in the Turners Cross and wider City area that still exists today,” said the Capwell 100 organising committee. “We want people of all ages to come together, share stories, reconnect with neighbours and enjoy a memorable day on the street.”
The Capwell 100 event forms part of Cork City Council’s Open Streets programme, which encourages communities to reclaim public spaces for social and cultural activities. Activities planned for the day include live music and local bands, games, and a special local history exhibition celebrating 100 years of Capwell. The event is entirely community-run and has been made possible through support from local residents, businesses and Cork City Council.
