How Water Works

For Water Heritage Day 2026, families and visitors to Old Cork Waterworks are invited to learn all about the science of water as you marvel at the built heritage at the only Victorian Waterworks in Ireland.

Experiment with different properties of water and discover how it behaves, build your own working water filter, and learn about some of the creatures that call our waters home. This drop-in style workshop is included in the price of admission.

Celebrate our rich heritage and explore this iconic landmark of the city’s skyline. Discover Cork City’s challenge and solution to provide fresh, clean drinking water to an ever-growing population from as far back as the 1700s!

Water Heritage Day is held in partnership with the Local Authority Waters Programme. As an island nation, our history and our heritage have been shaped by the sea and the great Irish rivers, lakes and wetlands. Water Heritage Day celebrates water throughout Ireland, its history and heritage and our connections with it.
