Current Works & Traffic Diversions

Parnell Plaza

Updated 20 August 2024

Morrison's Quay

Morrison's Quay will be closed fully from its junction with Morrison's street to its junction with South Mall, and closed southbound only from South Mall to Catherine Street, from Monday 15 July 2024 until Friday 11 July 2025, to enable works on the first phase of the scheme at the new plaza.

One-way traffic flow from Parliament Bridge to Morrison’s Street will remain in operation for the first phase of the works.

It will be necessary to remove on-street parking on Morrison’s Quay and Fr. Mathew Quay as the works progress, however for the first phase, the existing parking on Fr. Mathew Quay will largely remain in place .

Local access and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

South Mall

On Monday 15 July, construction will begin on the new plaza at the junction of South Mall and Parnell Bridge.  To facilitate this work, the traffic lanes on South Mall will be reduced to one lane turning left northbound onto Parnell Place, and one lane turning right southbound onto Parnell Bridge.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained.

Some night works may be required next week to carry out the enabling works.

Works in the River

In the coming weeks, works will start on the repair, repointing and cleaning of the quay walls at Morrison’s Island.  Some works will be done from a barge/platform in the river.

Initial works will involve removal of some of the existing timber fenders.  The fenders have been carefully surveyed and assessed by conservation specialists who have developed an appropriate strategy for their treatment.  Many of the fenders are in very poor repair (see images below).  Following repair to the quay walls, fenders will either be fully replaced, spot-repaired in situ, removed entirely and some will be replaced with substantial timber marker posts.

Any timber features removed will be safely stored for inspection and possible reuse on the project or for salvage.

Mariners are advised that starting from August 2024 until December 2025, work will be carried out on the Morrison's Island Public Realm & Flood Defence Project.

Work Details:

Start Date: August 2024

End Date: December 2025

Work Hours: 07:30 to 17:30 (Mon – Fri)

Location of works: Between Parliament Bridge and Parnell Bridge, Cork City.

The scope of work will include launching, operation, and retrieval of powerboats to assist in the project, the removal of existing fenders and associated ironmongery and the refurbishment works at Trinity Bridge. New proposed quay wall remedial works will also take place along Fr Matthew Quay, Morrison’s Quay, and a section of Union Quay. Works shall also include proposed in-channel piling, construction of a new bridge walk and bridge extensions.

As a result, there will be an increased presence of vessels, including pontoons, powerboats, and cranes within the specified working area. Diving operations will be conducted from a pontoon barge with a standby/safety vessel on hand. Hence, during operations there will be occasional restrictions on navigation in the vicinity of the work site. Mariners are requested to exercise caution.

All personnel involved in marine operations will be equipped with flotation devices and relevant safety gear. Emergency procedures have been put in place and all staff are trained to handle emergencies. A proposed lifeline will also be present across the channel upstream of Parnell Bridge in case of an emergency.
