28 Cork City Schools Awarded Green Flags for Environmental Action
27/05/2026
Twenty-eight schools across Cork City have been awarded Green Flags this year in recognition of their work under the Green Schools Programme. The awards mark the completion of a two-year process during which students, teachers, and wider school communities focused on improving environmental practices and awareness.
The Green Schools Programme supports schools in taking practical actions on issues such as waste reduction, energy use, biodiversity, and climate action. Through audits, planning, and student-led initiatives, participating schools develop sustainable habits that extend beyond the classroom.
The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy, congratulated the schools on their achievement:
“I warmly congratulate the students and teachers in the 28 Cork City schools awarded Green Flags this year. Their work shows how consistent effort at school level can make a meaningful contribution to the wider city. By taking practical steps and building awareness, they are helping to support Cork’s aim of becoming a more sustainable, climate-conscious city. The commitment shown across these schools demonstrates how local action can play an important role in responding to environmental challenges. I encourage all involved to continue this work and to build on the progress already made.”
This year’s group builds on continued participation in the programme across Cork City, following a separate cohort of 28 schools that received Green Flags in 2025. Together, these efforts reflect a growing engagement with sustainability and climate action at local level.
The contribution of schools is an important part of Cork City’s broader environmental ambitions, with young people playing a key role in shaping behaviours and supporting long-term change.
