Professor Brian Ó Gallachóir

Professor Brian Ó Gallachóir is Associate Vice-President of Sustainability at University College Cork (UCC), consolidating UCC's role as an internationally leading university of sustainability.

Brian is also Director of the Sustainability Institute, overseeing the strategic direction of over 450 sustainability researchers in UCC. Over the past 20 years, Brian established energy systems modelling capacity in Ireland and his research has underpinned Irish and EU energy and climate mitigation policies and energy company strategies. He is a recognised international leader in this field and is the elected Chair of International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme on energy systems modelling. He is also a member of the National Science Advisory Forum.

Brian has also led research in the societal dimensions of climate mitigation and this is particularly evident in the multi-stakeholder Dingle Peninsula 2030 partnership project. He received the inaugural SFI Engaged Research Award 2022 and the inaugural Irish Times Positive Impacts Award for Sustainability in 2024. Brian is a member of the Royal Irish Academy, an elected Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering, has a B.Sc. from TCD and a PhD from UCC.
