Local Authority Integration Team - LAIT

What is the Local Authority Integration Team? 

Local Authority Integration Teams (LAITs) are specialist teams established within every local authority in Ireland to support specific migrant populations. They operate nationwide (31 teams) and are funded by the Department of Justice, Home Affairs & Migration, working at local level to coordinate integration supports in communities.

LAITs operate under the national integration principle of “Integration from Day One”. This approach recognises that early access to information, services, and community connections is essential to successful long‑term integration, regardless of where a person ultimately settles in Ireland.Frequently Asked Questions 

Who LAIT Support

LAIT support the following groups

  • Applicants for International Protection (IP)
  • People with Refugee Status
  • People with Subsidiary Protection or Permission to Remain
  • Programme Refugees resettled in Ireland
  • Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs) – Ukrainian populations who are currently displaced

Core Role and Functions

LAIT do not replace existing statutory or voluntary services. Instead, they act as connectors and coordinators, helping people navigate complex public systems and access the right supports at the right time.

Key functions include:

  • Acting as a first point of contact for newly arrived individuals
  • Providing information, advice, and guidance on local services

How LAIT Work in Practice 

  • Hold information sessions and one-to-one clinics in IP & UKR accommodation centres and community venues
  • Offer one‑to‑one appointments based on individual needs
  • Co-ordinate local service mapping, identifying gaps and advocating for improved provision
  • Apply community development principles to encourage participation and inclusion

What LAIT Do Not Do 

  • Do not provide housing or accommodation
  • Do not allocate social housing
  • Do not manage accommodation settings

Note: Housing and accommodation remain the responsibility of national departments and housing authorities. LAITs may explain processes but cannot intervene directly.
