Tell us about your job
My role involves managing bookings for both the Concert Hall and the Millennium Hall within Cork City Hall. All events, including gigs, concerts, civic, and community functions, are processed through me. I also coordinate with various teams such as corporate affairs, porters, facilities, electricians, carpenters, cleaners, and other departments to ensure each event runs smoothly. Occasionally, I attend City Council meetings as part of my role.
How did you end up working as an Assistant Staff Officer for Cork City Council?
I was promoted from my previous role in Housing Allocations and transferred to Corporate Affairs. I hadn’t expected the move, but it seems my skills, particularly in customer service, were recognised, and I was given the opportunity to work in events.
What does a typical day involve?
It may sound like a cliché, but no two days are the same. I begin by checking emails and voicemails, following up with event organisers regarding dates, paperwork, and preparations to ensure the halls are ready. I also assist with registered post, help set up for Civic Receptions, and support colleagues with events and general office tasks.
And of course, part of the daily routine includes picking up the newspapers so the office can stay informed about what’s happening locally, nationally and internationally.
What is your favourite part of your job?
I really enjoy meeting groups who are hosting events here in City Hall and showing them around the halls. It’s a great opportunity to meet people from all walks of life - and occasionally a few well-known faces too. I also value the chance to connect with colleagues across different sections and stay informed about what’s happening throughout the building.
What can make your job challenging at times?
One of the main challenges is managing competing demands for event dates. With only two halls available, it can be difficult when multiple groups want the same date. Allocating bookings fairly and trying to accommodate everyone requires careful coordination. That said, a bit of unpredictability keeps the job interesting, and handling unexpected issues professionally is all part of the role.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Don’t take things too seriously - and laugh more. Life has its ups and downs, but things will work out in the end.
