Works Extent
This project involves improving and upgrading Ballyhooly Road from North Ring Road junction to Fox & Hounds junction and onwards to Mervue Lawn and also along Ballyvolane Road from North Ring Road to Banduff Road.
The works will improve accessibility, sustainability, capacity and safety of the transport network and include:
- Widening and realignment of the existing roadway;
- Provision of new, upgraded, and safer crossings throughout the scheme;
- Realignment of junctions for greater visibility and safety;
- Construction of new bus lanes, footpaths, and cycle lanes;
- Installation of traffic calming measures, upgraded road markings and signage, new energy efficient public lighting;
- New landscaping with tree & hedge planting
Objectives
- Enhanced facilities for all road users, particularly those using public transport, walking, and cycling;
- Improved connectivity from Ballyvolane to the city centre and the wider city;
- Improved bus journey times;
- Easing of traffic congestion and road safety issues at this location;
- Infrastructural support for the planned large scale residential development and lands zoned for housing in Ballyvolane;
- Safer facilities for vulnerable road users.
Timeline
Start: Construction started May 2025.
Finish: Works are expected to take approximately 18 months until December 2026. Construction will be carried out in phases.
