Communities Taking Climate Action in Cork City

Since 2021, Cork City Council has been working with communities across the city to support local climate action. This work recognises that communities are at the heart of creating a more sustainable, resilient and liveable city.

Through partnerships with residents, community groups, schools and environmental organisations, communities have been supported to take practical action on climate change in ways that respond to local priorities and opportunities.

Projects have focused on a wide range of areas including biodiversity, sustainable drainage, energy awareness, active travel, community growing, waste reduction, circular economy initiatives and climate adaptation. Alongside delivering projects on the ground, Cork City Council has worked to build local knowledge, strengthen community leadership and create opportunities for people to get involved in shaping climate action where they live.

A key part of this work has been supporting community-led projects. From greening neighbourhoods and enhancing local biodiversity to energy use reduction projects, communities have shown that local action can make a real difference.

Climate action in Cork City is also about collaboration. Successful projects have brought together residents, local organisations, Council departments and national agencies to share knowledge, develop new ideas and deliver lasting benefits for communities.

The pages below highlight some of the programmes, projects and partnerships that have helped communities across Cork City take climate action since 2021. Together, they demonstrate how local action is contributing to a healthier environment, stronger communities and a more climate-resilient city.
