Rapid Deployment Pedestrian Scheme 2024 - Northwest LEA

Works Extent

Construction works are underway on the Rapid Deployment Pedestrian Scheme Northwest.

Objectives

This project aims to provide:

  • Improved facilities for pedestrians to provide more attractive infrastructure to help promote active travel;
  • Enhanced accessibility for pedestrians to local services, places of work and bus stops by delivering dished paths with tactile paving and new paths on desire lines creating more direct routes;
  • Reduction in road widths to be traversed by pedestrians and provision of safer pedestrian uncontrolled crossings;
  • New public lighting designed to enhance inter-visibility between drivers and pedestrians at crossing points, and along new paths.

Progress Update - July 2025

Construction began in May 2025 with works commencing with installation of public lighting ducting and public lighting columns around the perimeter of the Fairfield.  All ducting and cabling is in place with an electrical certificate submitted to the ESB to progress connection.  Luminaires to be installed.

395 large concrete bollards have been removed from the length of John F Connolly and Churchfield Road.  These bollards will be crushed, graded and certified for re-use as ground materials on another construction site in line with EPA requirements, reducing waste materials going to landfill.

A section of retaining wall has been completed.  Footpath upgrades are continuing along with public lighting ducting.
