Works started on the Lehenaghmore Road Improvement Scheme in August 2025. Glas Civil Engineering Ltd. have been appointed as the main contractor to carry out the works. The initial works in August will consist of investigative surveys in advance of the main works starting towards the end of the month.
The project, funded by the National Transport Authority, starts at Tramore Road Roundabout and takes in the L2455 Pouladuff Road, extending southwards to Barrett’s Junction. From there, the scheme follows the L2454 Togher Road from Barrett’s Junction northwest and downhill near to Route 14 bar.
When completed, the scheme will deliver new footpaths and safe pedestrian crossings, safer roads for motorists with improved junctions and sightlines, new public transport and cycle facilities which will reduce the need for travel by car in the area, and improved public lighting and traffic calming solutions, which will make the area safer for all road users.
The lands in this part of the city have been significantly developed over recent years, which has resulted in increased demand for improved transport infrastructure between Lehenaghmore and the rest of the city, particularly for public transport and safer walking and cycling infrastructure, which this scheme will deliver.
Works that will be carried out in the scheme include:
- Road re-alignment and widening and resurfacing;
- Renewal and widening of existing footpaths, and new footpath construction;
- Construction of a new pedestrian/cycle bridge, adjacent to the railway bridge on Matthew Hill;
- Installation of new and improved bus stops;
- Construction of new cycling facilities;
- Signalisation of the Forge Hill junction;
- Junction improvements at Barrett’s Junction;
- Landscaping and planting;
- New stormwater drainage systems;
- New energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive public lighting;
- Construction of new retaining walls.
Current Works (updated 1 October 2025)
Togher Road
In the interest of safety, traffic restrictions, consisting of single lane traffic controlled by traffic lights, are in place on Togher Road to Barrett's Cross to facilitate surface water outfall drainage works, ducting for utility diversions for ESB/EIR/NBI services, and site clearance. This work is estimated to take until late October 2025 to complete.
Site clearance works and construction of boundary walls will continue around the junction of the Togher Road / Pouladuff Road (Barrett’s Cross), with minor traffic management, that will be removed during non-working hours. Site clearance works will commence, on the right hand side, at the bottom of Pouladuff Road opposite the Inver garage in early October and will progress up the Pouladuff Road with traffic management restrictions being removed each evening.
This programme for the scheme is provisional, based on current weather forecasts and favourable conditions. While the contractor will strive to follow the planned schedule, unforeseen events may require changes. Any significant updates will be communicated promptly to residents and stakeholders.
Scheme Timeline
The scheme works are expected to last approximately 18 months in total, and will be carried out in phases, in order to minimise disruption to residents. Updates to works will be provided to the public on Cork City Council’s social media platforms and on this web page, as well as to residents by the contractor’s on-site dedicated stakeholder liaison officer.
Objectives
A comprehensive review and redesign of the affected roads was undertaken following the transfer of this area into Cork City Council’s administrative responsibility. This review includes environmental, ecological, pedestrian/cyclist, site investigation and topographical surveys.
Cork City Council with the assistance of the National Transport Authority incorporated a number of CMATS recommendations into the proposed new road layout. These proposals prioritise investment in sustainable transportation to enable the city to achieve growth of the type and scale anticipated.
