Public Consultation for the Mary Street, Douglas Street & White Street Public Realm Enhancement Scheme Now Live
27/06/2025
The Part 8 Planning pubic consultation on the proposed Mary Street, Douglas Street & White Street Public Realm Enhancement Scheme opened on 12 June. The scheme seeks to improve the South Parish area, aiming to restore its "village within the city" atmosphere from times past.
The design aims to aims to reduce through-traffic, which currently accounts for 97% of all traffic during peak hours, improving the public realm, accessibility, and environmental quality for the benefit of those living, working and visiting Douglas Street and the surrounding area. It will retain sufficient parking for residents and businesses, while reallocating space for improved and wider footpaths, dedicated on-street parking, opportunities for urban greening through street trees and SuDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) features. The scheme also includes the creation of a new neighbourhood pocket park at the eastern end of Douglas Street, providing much needed local open space for the community.
The planning process for the scheme will run until Thursday 7 August 2025. The second of two public consultation open days will take place next week on Friday 4 July in Nano Nagle Place from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., where members of the public can view the plans, meet members of the design team and make their submissions. Residents and local businesses are encouraged to attend these open days and to have their say on the proposals and provide feedback that is essential in achieving the best outcome for their neighbourhood.
Details of the scheme, drawings and images will be available to view over that period on the Cork City Council Consult platform on https://consult.corkcity.ie . Observations and comments will be accepted up until Monday 25 August 2025.
