Cork City Council gave away 5,000 Native Trees Away for free as part of National Tree Week 2026.

Cork City Council gave away 5,000 trees to members of the public to celebrate National Tree Week.

City Council staff were on hand at Tramore Valley Park, at the Glen River Park and at the Glanmire Roads Depot to offer guidance and recommendations on how to plant the trees, where best to plant them, and how to ensure they will thrive.

We’d like to thank everyone who turned up for a free tree, and to thank the city council staff for their advice and guidance.

The City Council owns and manages about 17% of the city's total tree canopy.

Since 2021, Cork City Council has planted 20,000 trees across the city.

In partnership with Coillte and the Tree Council of Ireland, 5,500 native trees were distributed for free over the last two National Tree Week giveaways.

Commenting on the giveaway, Tree Officer with Cork City Council, Thomas Kane, said: “The enthusiasm over the past two years has been fantastic, and we’re excited to build on that momentum this National Tree Week. Each native tree planted is a meaningful investment in Cork’s future, supporting biodiversity and healthier green spaces. We encourage everyone to come along, pick up a tree, and help create a greener Cork.

Taking place from Sunday March 8 to Sunday March 15 2026, National Tree Week is an annual event organised by the Tree Council of Ireland in partnership with Coillte. It is the largest tree celebration in the country, providing a unique opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the beauty and importance of Ireland's trees.
