Building Resilience to Climate Change Workshop

On July 21st, 2025, Cork City Council hosted a workshop titled Building Resilience to Climate Change in Cork City, bringing together community voices, local government, and sectoral experts to explore what it means for Cork to become a climate resilient city.

Councillor Oliver Moran, Chair of the City Council’s Climate Action Committee, opened the session, followed by presentations from Peter Medway (Cork City Council), David Joyce(Director of Emergency Management and Climate Action), Rebecca Loughry (Director of Community, Corporate, and Cultural Affairs), and Maria Young (Green Spaces for Health). These presentations outlined the climate risks facing Cork, the systems already in place, and the importance of community-level responses.

The workshop discussions were facilitated by Jim Sheehan from the Social and Health Education Project (SHEP). Participants explored two key questions: What defines aclimate-resilient Cork? And What should a more resilient future look like? Their contributions will directly inform Cork City Council’s application to the Pathways2Resilience programme, a Horizon Europe initiative supporting transformative climate adaptation strategies across Europe.

Cork is proud to be a charter signatory of the EU’s Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change and one of only two Irish cities awarded the EU Mission Label for Climate Neutral & Smart Cities. This co-creation workshop ensured that diverse local voices are central to the city’s resilience planning. The ideas shared on the day will help guide future actions and ensure that Cork’s approach reflects the needs and priorities of its communities.
