Research-Education

Another important aspect of the work carried out here is allowing our collections to be accessed by academics, students, historians, archaeologists and interested members of the public to study and research. Our collections have featured in many published works related to the history and archaeology of Cork and further afield. Working with experts from many areas of Cork's history enables us to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of our collections that improves and enhances our exhibitions and events.

Cork Public Museum has developed very close relationships with many third-level and post-secondary colleges such as University College Cork, Cork Institute of Technology, Galway and Mayo Institute of Technology, and Coláiste Stiofán Naofa. Students studying subjects such as Archaeology, History, Cultural & Heritage studies, Tourism & Heritage Management and Museum Studies will undertake part of their course at the museum. This can range from a simple guided tour/class talk by the curator to placements that allow students to get on-the-job practical work experience. At the heart of these collaborations is the desire to utilise the educational potential of our collections as well play a role in training future museum and heritage employees and educating them about forging a career in their chosen field.
