Sport and Sporting Pursuits

The sporting and recreation needs of citizens and visitors alike are well met in Cork.

The harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world. It’s safety is what gives the City the ancient motto proudly borne on it’s Coat of Arms - “Statio Bene Fide Carinis”  ('Safe Harbour for Ships'). Little wonder then that Cork has long been a mecca for sailing enthusiasts - the worlds oldest yacht club, The Royal Cork Yacht Club, is located nearby at Crosshaven, a village that plays host bi-annually to the internationally renowned Cork Week Sailing Regatta

Thousands readily find their recreational needs met by the harbour and spectacular coastline - engaging in such diverse pursuits as scuba-diving, swimming, fishing, walking and water-skiing.

Equally, the availability of a large number of championship quality golf courses in the region continues to draw thousands of golfers to the region.

For the (perhaps less energetic) sports enthusiasts happy to restrict their involvement to that of spectator, the options are endless. Our national games of hurling and football have always been strong in Cork, both at club and inter-county level. In soccer, Cork City Football Club takes part in the National Premier League.

And for racing enthusiasts, regular greyhound racing takes place at Curraheen Park with regular horse racing meetings taking place at the Cork Track

For runners of the non-four legged variety, the long-established Cork City Sports international athletics meeting takes place annually at CIT, Bishopstown – a must for genuine lovers of athletics.
