In 1991 Cork City Council approved the twinning of Cork City with the city of Swansea in Wales.  The formal Swansea twinning ceremonies took place in 1992 and the formal Cork twinning ceremony took place in September 1994 with signatories then Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor Tim Falvey and the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Bob Davis.

Because of the close cultural ties between the two cities the City Council endeavours each year to promote these ties. Some of the recent activities that have taken place are 

  • The Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Ioan Richard and the Lady Mayoress, Irish Richard visited Cork from May 19th to May 21st.  His visit co-incided with the visit of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II to Cork.

  • An athlete from Swansea Harriers Athletic Club, Daniel Rothwell competed in the Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th June, 2011. On Tuesday, June 7th, Mr. Rothwell paid a courtesy visit to the Lord Mayor of Cork, where he also met members of the International Relations Twinning Committee, members of the Cologne and Swansea Sub Committees, and the City Manager Mr. Tim Lucey.
