Launch of two new libraries in Cork

Cork City Council Library Service is delighted to announce two launch events to mark the openings of the new Douglas and Blackpool libraries. The Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Dara Murphy will officially open Blackpool library at 11:30am on Friday 30th April and Douglas library at 2:30pm on the same day.

Welcoming the libraries, the Lord Mayor said; "These libraries represent a major civic investment into these vibrant local communities. We look forward to everyone enjoying their facilities, browsing their shelves and borrowing their books."

Joe Gavin Cork City Manager said "Cork’s literary and cultural tradition is one of the cities strongest characteristics.   These libraries are a testament to the continued belief of Cork City Council in the value and power of the knowledge economy, for this and future generations"’

"Blackpool and Douglas now have centrally located new library facilities serving all of their communities.  Libraries are a core part of local authorities work, and I would like to thank all of those involved in making these new libraries a reality" remarked Valerie O’Sullivan, Director of Services, Recreation, Amenity and Cultural directorate.

There will be lots of children’s events taking place in both libraries and we invite you to come along, celebrate with us and join in the fun. When you visit the Douglas and Blackpool libraries on Friday 30th April you will meet some of the characters in your favourite books, including Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter and Dracula! you will see a puppet show from the less than bashful ‘Basher Bacon’ with Dominic from the ‘Morbegs’ on RTE, hear a story from Cork favourite Pat ‘the Hat’ Speight, have your face painted and make your very own jewellery with hand made African beads… so come along and celebrate the opening of your new library!!
