Cork City and County host 13th European Bowling Championships


From Thursday 1st May until Sunday 4th May 2008 Cork city and county hosted the 13th European Bowling Championships which brought thousands of competitors and spectators from the entire island of Ireland, Italy, Holland and Germany to venues in the city and county. The event  jointly organized by  by the European Bowl Playing Association and the Irish representative body for Road Bowling, Bol Cumann na hÉireann, who were understandably delighted to have been chosen to host this important international sporting event.

Although considered in Ireland to be a minority sport, Road Bowling is hugely popular on the continent with some clubs in Germany hosting up to 40,000 members. For this reason competition to participate in this event has been very high with up to 1500 who travelled from Germany alone for the event.

Highlights over the weekend included

Thursday, 1st May @ 19.00 hrs

Parade of the Nations through the streets of Cork finishing at City Hall, Cork, where they were adressed by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Donal Counihan.

Friday, 2nd May @ 09.00 hrs

German European Lofting Championships at Nemo Rangers sports complex  where Minister Micheal Martin and Bishop John Buckley, accompanied by Susan Green from Bol Cumann na hÉireann,  were present to welcome all participants with medal ceremony at 17.00 hrs.

Saturday, 3rd May @09.00 hrs

Dutch Moors European Championships at Rathcoole Airfield, Rathcoole. Mallow Medal ceremony at 17.00hrs

Sunday, 4th May @0 9.00 hrs

Irish Bowling European Championships on Bandon-Dunmanway road (R586). The road was closed for the duration of the event and this one event attracted  thousands of spectators !

At 18.00 on Sunday 4th May the Euro 2008 standard was  lowered and the standard was passed to the Italian confederation for the 2012 event.
