President of Slovak Republic, Ivan Gašparovic, is awarded Honorary Membership of Cork City Council

The President of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Gašparovic, was awarded Honorary Membership of Cork City Council at a meeting of the City Council in City Hall, Cork, on Wednesday, 28th March 2007.

The President was presented with this Honorary Membership in recognition of his role in strengthening the special relationship between Cork and the Slovak Republic (developed since 1 st May 2004 when Cork welcomed the accession of the Slovak Republic to the European Union), in recognition of the integral part played by the Slovak Republic during Cork’s reign as European Capital of Culture 2005 and the Enlargement – Bringing the ‘new’ Europe to Cork project, and of continuing and future collaboration.

Speaking at the meeting the Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Michael Ahern said “It is primarily because of your enthusiastic participation in the events of our tenure as European Capital of Culture and your ongoing commitment to strengthening the links between Cork and the Republic of Slovakia that we honour you here today with this, the first occasion on which a visiting Head of State has been conferred with Honorary Membership of our City Council. We take our commitment to our citizens very seriously and the Council Chamber of Cork City Council is as vigorous a Chamber of debate as one would expect of a City famous for its rebelliousness. We sincerely hope you will return to Cork in the near future and look forward to welcoming you to the Chamber on such an occasion.”

In response the President of the Slovak Republic said that is was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to address the officials and citizens of Cork city which has welcomed Slovakia to the EU in such a grand manner. He concluded “ thank you for awarding me the title of Honorary Member of the Cork City Council. I realise that I am the first foreign official ever to be awarded this privilege, and I understand it as a token of the solid relation of your city to Slovakia and its citizens.”

The visit by the President and his wife, Mrs. Silvia Gasparovicova, to Cork was part of their State visit to Ireland from 25 th to 28 th March 2007.


Honorary Membership of Cork City Council

Honorary Membership of Cork City Council is granted to Prime Ministers and Heads of State only. The decision to grant Honorary Membership of Cork City Council has the support of the majority of the members of Cork City Council. Each honorary member has the right to address a meeting of Council once in each Council term. No voting rights attach to honorary membership. Each honorary member will receive a presentation of a framed Honorary Membership Certificate.
