The Big Hello! Comes to Cork City This Weekend!

Cork City will celebrate National Community Weekend this weekend (4 - 6 May) with 18 events that capture the strong community spirit of Cork city.

One of the main events guaranteed to draw mass appeal is the Cornmarket Community Funday, happening on 5 May (2.30pm – 4.30pm). Cork City Council and the Cornmarket Street Traders are inviting all to the Cornmarket Community Funday – why not test your strength on the Strongman Bar, immerse yourself in a Gong & Sound bath or get those green thumbs out for flower planting?

This promises to be a lively, colourful and relaxed event for all the family, with music, games, dance and even the chance to practice your ‘strongman’ skills, in this unique and historic city thoroughfare.

The Department of Rural and Community Development has awarded each local authority €10,000 which, in Cork City, has been graciously matched by the HSE Cork and Kerry to award grants of up to €1,000 to community based organisations who wish to host a National Community Weekend event, as part of ‘the Big Hello’.

In Cork City 18 events will be celebrated across our communities this weekend, including:

  • A local community picnic day with the Ballinlough Youth Group
  • A pop up playground in Blackrock
  • Park clean up day and BBQ on South Douglas Road
  • Irish language event ‘Ciorcal Cómhrá’
  • ABC EduLibrary will be holding a Polish Culture Weekend

Cork City Council Social Inclusion Officer, Tony Power said: “Cork City Local Community Development Committee is delighted with the “Big Hello”, our National Community weekend which is a great opportunity to meet your neighbour, foster a sense of belonging and welcome in our local communities for all. You can never underestimate the ripple effect of a local get together, showing how we are all #WeAreCork together.”
