Heritage Week 2009 was yet another big success in Cork City. A series of heritage related events were organized by Cork City Council, community groups, heritage and historical societies and individuals. The aim of these events was to raise awareness, appreciation and knowledge of Heritage in Cork City
Cork City Council would like to thank all those organisations who assisted in making Heritage Week so successful and was delighted to support and promote Heritage Week 2009 at a local level in Cork City. The week is co-coordinated nationally by the Heritage Council with support from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and it is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union.
Some of the events that took place in Cork City for Heritage week 2009 are outlined below. In should be noted that many of these sites, museums, parks are open to visit and enjoy heritage the whole year round not just during Heritage Week.

Details Lifetime Lab on Lee Road in Cork City will mark the end of the summer holidays with a Water Open Day on Saturday 30th August from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be free and children and adults alike can come and enjoy a series of stands and activities which will help them find out more about water.
Activities will include launching of water rockets from the Lifetime Lab garden, getting up close and personal with minibeasts that live in water, learning how to be a water detective, blow giant bubbles and lots more. Lifetime Lab is fully wheelchair accessible, and also has a coffee dock, picnic area and children’s playground.

Details The Cork Public Museum, in association with the National Roads Authority and the National Museum of Ireland, are holding an exciting new exhibition entitled New Roads – New Discoveries: Archaeological Discoveries on National Road Schemes in County Cork 2001-2007, at the Cork Public Museum, Fitzgerald Park, Cork, from the 11th June to 19th December, 2008. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the various periods of Irish archaeology and to explore how people lived and died. Computer generated three-dimensional models will enable visitors witness first hand how our ancestors lived. The exhibition will also show how archaeologists carry out their work.
