The first ever Heritage Plan for Cork City was launched at the City Hall on Tuesday the 27th of November by the Lord Mayor Councillor Donal Counihan. The Manager of Cork City Council and a representative from the Heritage Council, Maurice Hurley, was also present.

The aim of the Heritage Plan is “To Secure the Heritage of Cork City, to Enrich the Lives of its People and to Ensure that the Care of our Heritage; Past, Present and Future is at the Heart of the Development of the City”.

The Plan seeks to identify practical, achievable and realistic actions and objectives for the care, protection and development of Cork City’s Heritage over the next five years.

The Plan contains 47 actions and covers topics such as Archaeology, Built Heritage, Natural Heritage and Cultural Heritage. 12 actions from the Heritage Plan were completed this year. These include projects such as a study of bridges in the city centre, a training seminar on Cork’s Historic Ironwork, an online archives exhibition, Cork Heritage Open Day, a survey of trees at the Lough and adding a Heritage category to the Better Buildings Awards. The process of developing a Biodiversity Plan for the city has also begun with a draft expected for early 2008.

The Cork City Heritage Plan is very much for the people of the City and is under pinned by the principle of shared responsibility for our Heritage. Therefore the Heritage Plan seeks to bring together the different agencies, interest groups and individuals with responsibility for or an interest in local Heritage in the City.

It is hoped that the Cork City Heritage Plan will enhance quality of life for the people of Cork City by improving and protecting what they cherish in their own City. Copies of the Heritage Plan will be available for consultation at the Planning Counter at the City Hall and in branches of the Cork City Libraries.

Copies are also available for purchase at the City Hall.
