Public Participation Network - Public Meeting 3rd February

A public meeting regarding the establishment of a Cork City Public Participation Network (PPN) will take place in the Council Chamber, City Hall on Tuesday 3rd February 2015 at 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to inform interested groups about the PPN process and the benefits of PPN membership.

Cork City Council has announced the establishment of the Public Participation Network to be the new representative voice of the Community and Voluntary, Social Inclusion and Environmental sectors aimed at enhancing and expanding the role played by community groups in the formulation of local government policy and the future development of local communities across the city.

Con O'Donnell of Cork City Council will outline the process required to establish the PPN and will invite views and comments on how the PPN might work. "Initially the Council is required to set up the PPN and to seek the selection of community representatives on the Joint Policing Committee and Strategic Policy Committees. Over time the PPN will be consulted by the Council and public agencies around policies affecting the public and will also select community nominees to sit on other City structures, including the Local Community Development Committee."

The meeting will be addressed by Anne Irwin of the Community Workers Cooperative who is coordinating the PPN in Galway City. She will outline how the network in Galway operates.  She described the PPN as "an important mechanism for representing & engaging with communities, city council and other decision making agencies to ensure a focus on social inclusion issues."

Bernie Connolly of the Cork Environmental Forum will discuss the Environmental Pillar and Siobhán O’Dowd of Ballyphehane Togher Community Development Project will define in greater detail the social inclusion college versus the community and  voluntary college.

The initial deadline for registration onto the PPN is Friday 6th February 2015.   Application form for Public Participation Network may downloaded online, requested by email to ppn@corkcity.ie, by post to PPN, Community & Enterprise Section, City Hall, Cork or by  telephone to (021) 4924373
