Statement from Lord Mayor of Cork

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Tony Fitzgerald confirmed that Cork City Council has presented a detailed assessment of the extended city boundary line, proposed by the Expert Advisory Group (MacKinnon), to the Implementation Oversight Group established by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy.

“Now that this meeting has taken place, it is appropriate for Cork City Council to share this presentation with the people of Cork.  I have now also asked the Executive of Cork City Council to arrange for a series of information sessions to be held around this presentation.

These sessions will be aimed at informing citizens of both city and county of the rationale and principles behind Cork City Council’s assessment.

The assessment is based upon future proofing the development of Cork for the next 50 years, keeping communities together, upon topography and physical geography in the area, existing and future infrastructure, County Development and Local Area Plan development areas.

This revised boundary line is about designing Cork 2050 and not about Cork 2017. Existing Local Area Plans (LAPs) clearly outline the county council’s plans for a development corridor between Ovens and Carrigtwohill.

The presentation demonstrated clearly why the MacKinnon Expert Advisory Group chose to include all of these now outlying areas within an expanded city expansion.

The Local Area Plans set out how within a 50 year timeframe, Cork County Council intends to develop this corridor in such way that if you were to travel from Midleton, through Carrigtwohill, Glounthaune, into the city, through the Science and Technology Park, through Ballincollig, you would be on the far side of Killumney before you would re-enter a rural environment.

If we are to maximise investment and jobs in such an extensive urban area and if the citizens, communities and businesses in this area are to be served by quality urban public transport, housing, schools, recreation and shopping facilities, it is accepted by all parties that a single urban authority is the most appropriate form of governance for this corridor”.
