Cork City Centre has been successful in retaining its Purple Flag status. The prestigious Purple Flag is an international award for surpassing the standards in the evening and night-time economy. Towns and cities awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant mix of entertainment while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.
The award recognises Cork City Centre as a ‘must-visit’ location, placing Cork amongst a small, prestigious group of cities to have achieved this standard. The judges highlighted Cork City Centre as being a great night time destination for all ages and for having an excellent mix of exciting and diverse evening entertainment on offer.
Lord Mayor Cllr Des Cahill said ‘I warmly welcome the retention of this award. The award is not just about safety, but also the vibrancy and diversity of the evening and night-time offer. This can only be achieved by people working together and I would like to thank Cork Business Association, Cork Chamber, Cork City Council, an Garda Síochána, the transport authorities and most importantly the traders and businesses in the city centre for their great efforts in this regard’
Everyone is encouraged to paint the town purple this weekend (October 7th-9th) for International Purple Flag weekend. Cork City Hall will be illuminated in purple in honour of the achievement.
