Cork City Council has unveiled its programme of events for Culture Night Cork City and has announced that renowned opera singer Cara O’Sullivan is this year’s Cultural Ambassador of Culture Night Cork City.Organised by the Arts Office of Cork City Council, Culture Night Cork City will take place on Friday September 16th and is a fantastic celebration of the best of Cork music, literature, food, theatre, film, visual arts and much more all for free.
Speaking at the launch, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Des Cahill said “Culture Night Cork City is a wonderful opportunity to showcase what makes Cork so special. This year over 100 venues are participating and over 200 free events for all age groups will take place. We are delighted that Cara O’Sullivan is the Cultural Ambassador of Culture Night Cork City and we look forward to celebrating Culture Night on September 16th”
Cork City Council Arts Office, Crawford Art Gallery and CIT College of Art and Design will commemorate the centenary of the Proclamation with Perceptions 2016, an exciting variety of multi-venue exhibitions and events that showcases the artwork of over 60 national and international artists. With ten venues participating in the special Culture Night 1916-2016 Perception Trail, this is an event not to miss.
For the first time the 210-year-old Cork Prison will be open for Culture Night. Tour the prison and visit the site of the execution and former burial place of 1916 Patriot Thomas Kent.
Organised by the Munster Literature Centre, On the Trail of the Poets is a poetry trail around the streets of Cork where well known poets will recite poetry from iconic Cork locations including Elizabeth Fort and Nano Nagle Bridge. Book readings and book launches will also take place and Cultural Ambassador Cara O’Sullivan will launch On The Banks: Cork City in poems and songs, edited by Alannah Hopkin.
Enjoy fun walks through the UCC Campus as the Glucksman hosts a series of events including a Teddy’s Bear Walk, A Drawing Walk and a Photography Walk. Create a Marvellous Map at the Glucksman Art Workshop and track your route for Culture Night. To commemorate Shakespeare 400, Dr. Edel Semple (Cork School of English) will explore the books that inspired Shakespeare’s greatest works.
Wish You Were There Man? Experience four hours of original footage of the iconic 60’s music festival Woodstock on the big screen in Triskel Christchurch. 60’s dress and catchphrases welcome!
Lantern Productions and Re-Imagine Cork will present Skiddy's Castle Plaza- the story of six friends who return to their hang-out spot on North Main Street for one last night together before they emigrate from Cork. Directed by Eoin Ó’hAnnracháin this performance has been created especially for Culture Night Cork City and will take place on North Main Street.
Architect Gareth O’Callaghan will give a guided visit of Nano Nagle’s Place and discuss the challenges presented by the site. Mícheál Ó’ Laoghaire will give a walking tour as gaeilge on the history of the streets of Cork City while those interested in the stars can explore astronomy heritage through Irish with a planetarium pop up in Cork City Hall.
The Douglas Comhaltas Céilí Band and the Dust Busters Light Orchestra will perform in Cork Bus Station while free Bus Éireann Buses will take people all over Cork City as part of Culture Night Cork City.
Culture Night Cork City caters for all ages and younger children can recite their own poems at Blackpool Community Centre and/or enjoy free dance classes at Joan Denise Moriarty School of Dance. Children’s Rap workshops will take place at the Rap Kabin in Knocknaheeney while Music Generation will deliver series of music workshops for young and older kids in Cork City Hall.
Music trails, food tastings, poetry readings, dance performances are just a selection of the events that will take place on Culture Night Cork City.
