Cork Signs Major Agreement with Wuxi City in China

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Terry Shannon signed an agreement with Wuxi – a city of 6.8 million people in Jiangsu Province, just west of Cork’s Sister City Shanghai.  The agreement is part of the City’s strategy to build contacts in the key Yangtze Delta region.

Welcoming the link with Cork, Vice Mayor Fang Wei of Wuxi Municipal People’s Government praised Cork’s initiative in developing this link and noted that the cities have been co-operating since 2004. He looked forward to developing projects between SMEs in both cities, in tourism and technologies to address polluting industries.

Responding, the Lord Mayor said the Wuxi provided a good partner for Cork and its range of economic activity was impressive. He identified visa issues as a restricting element in the development of tourism and promised to raise this issue with the relevant authorities on his return to Ireland.   He also stressed the importance of citizens of the city in promoting tourism and making visitors feel welcome.
