The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Terry Shannon congratulated the Confucius Institute in UCC on its stunning achievement at the 6th Confucius Institute Conference in Beijing at which the UCC Confucius Institute was awarded the title of "Confucius Institute of the Year".
The Lord Mayor said:
“I wish to congratulate Prof. Fan Hong and her colleagues on this outstanding achievement. As a Board Member of the Confucius Institute, I see at first hand the tremendous work that goes on in the Confucius Institute including teaching Chinese in over 30 local schools. I attended the conference myself and witnessed the high status that Prof. Fan commands at the highest level in Chinese education circles.
In order to build on the momentum of this success, I now call on the Minister for Education and Skills to introduce Chinese as an option in State examinations as soon as possible. This country needs excellence, benchmarked internationally, to address the problems facing it successfully."
The Lord Mayor also attended meetings with the Chinese Ministry of Education, The Chinese Ministry of Sport and also Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) with Prof. Fan to discuss the Confucius Institute Building and Chinese Garden Project, a joint initiative of UCC and Cork City Council. The delegation to Beijing also included the President of UCC, Dr. Michael Murphy; City Manager, Tim Lucey and Prof. Zhu Yanwei, of the Confucius Institute in UCC.
