Switching on of Cork Christmas Retail and City Centre Lights  

On Friday November 25th Cork city saw the switching on of the Christmas Retail and City Centre Lights. Organised by Cork City Council, the city centre was transformed into a hive of activity as Cork gears up for the lighting of the City Centre Christmas lights.

Christmas favourite songs were performed by The Concorde Quintet on Patrick’s Street. The Christmas Lights were officially turned on at 5.30pm by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Terry Shannon on a special stage located at the top of Opera Lane. Assisting the Lord Mayor of Cork with the switching on of the lights was a lucky child specially chosen by Steve Hayes on Cork’s 96FM.

Following the turning on of the Christmas Lights, the Lord Mayor was guided by Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, Cinderella and Prince Charming from Patrick’s Street, down Opera Lane to Emmet Place. The Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Terry Shannon proceeded to the main Cork Opera House Balcony where he was joined by Cinderella and special guest Santa Claus.

Over three hundred children wearing Santa hats representing school choirs from all over Cork performed a “Sing out for Santa” and sang a selection of Christmas songs including Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, Santa Claus is coming to Town and A Winter Wonderland. Members of the public were also given song sheets and the choir were directed by Cork Soprano Sonya Keogh.
