The official opening of A Cork Christmas Celebration took place at 6.00 p.m. on Friday 25th November with the City of Cork Male Voice Choir performing various Christmas songs on the Nano Nagle Boardwalk. This was followed by speeches from The Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Terry Shannon and John Mullins CEO of Bord Gáis before the festival was officially opened and its Christmas Lights turned on by renowned comedian Maeve Higgins at 6.30pm.
City Manager Tim Lucey welcomed the event, remarking
“Cork is coming alive with festive cheer. Christmas is a time to share and we offer this freely, as a gift to citizen and visitor alike. Combined with the efforts of hospitality and business sectors, we see these events as underlining that Cork is the centre for culture, tourism and retail in the south of Ireland.’
Cork City Council are pleased to announce that title sponsors Bord Gáis Energy are once again involved with the event this year.

The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind are the official designated charity for the opening weekend of the festival and various guide dogs were on site to help with the switching on of the Christmas Lights.
Due to popular demand A Cork Christmas Celebration will take place for fifteen days and will run every weekend until December 21.
