The Darren Swanton Memorial Car Rally Sprint event took place on Sunday 22nd May from 10am until 6pm at the Cork City Civic Amenity Centre on Kinsale Road. The event was organised and promoted by Cork Motor Club Ltd in association with Cork City Council and the Bishopstown and District Lions Club. The event aims to raise money for the Marymount Hospice. Darren was a 30 year old member of the Cork Motor Club who died of cancer in Marymount in 2009.
The event included 100 state of the art rally cars competing against the clock over a 2km circuit.
Fun activities for the kids such as face painting, bouncy castle etc. were provided. Other novelty events included a Massey Ferguson tractor being taken apart and re – assembled during the day. Though not sucessful in achieving a Guinness Book of Records speed record it was acheived in under 7 minutes, narrowly missing the record.
The Rally organisers raised €28,000 in 2010 and it is hoped that this amount will be exceeded by Sunday's event. All proceeds will go to Marymount Hospice.
