On Monday September 20th Cork welcomed home its victorious Senior Football team to the city centre to a crowd estimated to be in excess of 45,000 people. A patient and expectant crowd were entertained by Red FM, DJ Dave Mac, Rapper GMC, singer Michele Fitzgerald and Cork stalwarts Billa  O’ Connell and Sean Ó Sé.

When the team and management arrived on stage there was an explosion of sound as the assembled crowd welcome the conquering heroes .The Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Michael O’ Connell addressed the crowd referencing another famous Corkman . “ 65 years ago one of Cork’s famous sons brought home his first and only Senior Football title to Cork. Tonight the All Ireland winners of 2010 brought the Sam Maguire through the Jack Lynch tunnel. “

A rousing reception was also accorded the minors who agonizingly failed to make it a Cork football double, losing the final to Tyrone by a point. Cork manager Conor Counihan paid glowing tribute to those football fans who had never lost faith. He said the players had defied their critics -- and showed both character and courage.

"Twenty years is a long time to be organizing a party so we're going to make sure it was worth the wait tonight," he told the crowd to roars of approval.

Huge cheers greeted all the players from No 1 Alan Quirke right through the whole panel but it was clear there was a particular affection for veterans, Canty and Murphy and forwards Daniel Goulding and Donnacha O’Connor who between them got 14 of Cork’s tally of 16 points. The homecoming was also streamed live on Cork City Council and Irish Examiner websites, the demand being so great it let to occasional service outages.
