Cork City Council promotes alternative family events on Bonfire Night

 

Summer Fun Nights, alternative family events on Bonfire Night, Wednesday , June 23rd supported by Cork City Council.  

For the third year, Summer Fun Nights, alternative family-friendly events organised by local community groups in conjunction with Cork City Council, will take place again in parks city-wide on this Bonfire Night, Wednesday June 23rd.  There will be something for everyone in five city parks including music, circus performance, sports, arts and crafts and much, much, more.

The parks where events are taking place include Kilmore Road Park, Knocknaheeny (6 pm to 9 pm), Pophams Park, Farranree (4 pm to 7 pm), Glenamoy Park, Mayfield (5 pm to 8 pm), Lough Mahon Park, Mahon (6.30 pm to 9.30 pm) and Clashduv Park, Togher (5.30 pm to 9.30 pm). In addition, a further four local community events are funded though Cork City Council in Kerry Hall Road, Bishopstown, Douglas and in Blackpool.

“With up to 7,800 people attending activities in 2009, the aim of Summer Fun Nights has been to support local community groups to provide alternative safe events on Bonfire night and is supported by An Garda Síochána", said Valerie O’Sullivan, Director of Services, Recreation, Amenity and Culture, Cork City Council. 

“These events are very much led by local community organisations which have come together and taken the initiative to organise events in their own area with the support of Cork City Council”.

Events are free, all are welcome and all events are alcohol-free.  NB Children need to be accompanied by an adult.

Mahon – Lough Mahon Park, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm

Come join the fun with music from local groups, puppet shows, storytelling, sports and an organised community bonfire. Local groups Jonathan Strutters, Thomas McCarthy and the Kitchen will be performing. Events are free and all are welcome. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. This is an alcohol-free event.

Organised by Cork City Council, Mahon Community Groups and An Garda Síochána. Supported by Department of Social Protection.

Togher - Clashduv Park, 5.30 pm to 9.30 pm

All are welcome at Clashduv Park which will feature a packed day of Sports, performances from local Music Performances, Arts and Crafts, Drumming workshops and much, much more. There is something for all age groups with Bouncy Castles, Facepainting and an organised bonfire at 8.45 pm. Events are free and all are welcome. Bring a picnic. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. This is an alcohol-free event.

Knocknaheeney – Kilmore Road Park 6 pm to 9 pm

There will be some thing for all ages at Kilmore Road Park Knocknaheeny, with Penalty Shoot outs, demonstrations from Munster Rugby, Dance performances, Music, face painting and an organised bonfire at 8.15 pm. All events are free and children need to be accompanied by an adult. This is an alcohol-free event.

Organised by Cork City Council, Ográ Chorcaí, Knocknaheeny/Hollyhill Justice Project, We The People CDP, NICHE, School Completion Programme, Springboard, Linkpoint, Barnardos, Community Volunteers and An Garda Síochána.

Farranree -  Popham’s Park 4 pm, to 7 pm

All are welcome family fun day in Pophams Park featuring performances from the Fanzini Brothers, music performances, Facepainting, Sports, Bouncy castles and much, much more… 

Organised by Cork City Council, F.A.D.A., Farranree Community Development Project, Ográ Chorchaí (The Lodge), F.A.Y.R.E. Project, Home School Community Liaison, Scoil ĺosagáin, Scoil Aiséirí, North Presentation Secondary School, An Garda Síochána, H.S.E. Springboard, H.A.Z., Farranree Family Resource Centre, P.A.K.T. Project, Na Piársaigh G.A.A., Little Steps Childcare Service. Supported by Local Business and Bus Éireann.

Mayfield  Glenamoy Park, Mayfield, 5 pm to 8 pm

Glenamoy Park will be action packed with Music, stilwalkers, facepainting, Beautican demostrations, Arts and Crafts and sports from 5 pm to 8 pm. All events are free and children need to be accompanied by an adult. This is an alcohol-free event.
