Water quality improvement measures in the Lough

Water quality improvement measures in the Lough

In week commencing Monday 10th May staff from the Cork City Council  Recreation, Amenity and Culture directorate placed barley straw in netting around the perimeter of the island at the Lough. The decay product of the barley straw assists with the suppression of algae bloom as a measure to improve the water quality. The straw is positioned at the surface of the water to maximize its benefit. The continuing cooperation of the public in not feeding bread to the birds is vitally important as this practice has contributed in a major way to the poor water quality, with consequences for the health of birds and fish at the lake.
