2010 Marathon fitness get ready

Mark McManus, Health and Wellness Manager of LeisureWorld Bishopstown, starts John Mullins, CEO Bord Gáis and Lord Mayor, Cllr. Dara Murphy on their 40-week training programme for the 2010 Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon.

LeisureWorld Cork will train two of Cork ’s leading men to run in the 2010 Cork City Marathon. Cork City Council’s Lord Mayor, Cllr. Dara Murphy and Bord Gáis Chief Executive, John Mullins, are preparing to run in the relay event of the marathon.

Earlier this year, John Mullins challenged the Lord Mayor to race against him over the first leg of the 2010 Marathon in return for Bord Gáis Energy’s continued sponsorship of the Marathon!

The Lord Mayor didn’t hesitate in accepting the challenge and welcomed Bord Gáis Energy back as title sponsors for 2010. “The relay is what makes this the Marathon for everyone”, Cllr Murphy said. “It’s an incentive for everyone, including myself, to get out there and improve their fitness. With over 170 charities benefiting from the marathon each year it’s also an ideal opportunity for fund raising, so I’m delighted to take part in this great event”, the Lord Mayor continued. “John may have the experience of the 2009 relay in his favour, but I’m confident that with LeisureWorld’s expert help I’ll give him a good run for his money!”

The public will be able to follow the training diary of both runners through the LeisureWorld website blogs (, and they will also be keeping everyone up to date through Twitter.

The Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 7th June 2010 and is supported by Cork City Council who are committed to growing the event to become one of the major events in the Irish sporting calendar.
