Cork City Council elects new Lord Mayor

At its meeting held on Monday, 15th June 2009, Cork City Council elected Cllr. Dara Murphy, Lord Mayor of Cork.

The new Lord Mayor is a member of Fine Gael. He was first elected to Cork City Council in 2004 (North East Electoral Ward). Cllr. Murphy was elected Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork in 2005.

The Lord Mayor was born in Mayfield, Cork (fourth generation Murphy). He lives in Gardiners Hill, Cork city. The Lord Mayor is married to Tanya and they have three daughters - Isobel, Sophie and Nicole.

The Lord Mayor studied Economics in UCC, having attended CBC. He is self-employed in the catering industry.

Cllr. Laura McGonigle (FG) was elected Deputy Lord Mayor.

Cllr. Laura McGonigle was co-opted onto Cork City Council in June 2007 to replace Deirdre Clune TD. She was educated in Regina Mundi College, Douglas Road and works as a Financial Accountant in Blackrock.
