Bamboo & Silk: A celebration for the Chinese Year of the Ox

The Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Brian Birmingham welcomed His Excellency Mr. H. E. Liu Biwei, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Concert Hall in Cork's City Hall on Wednesday, January 28th 2009 to celebrate the Chinese New Year, the year of the Ox.

An evening concert of a Chinese cultural theme “Bamboo and Silk” was performed by visiting musicians, dancers, martial arts exponents and acrobats from China. Students from UCC also performed during the evening.

The Lord Mayor and the Ambassador addressed the large audience composed of members of the Chinese community in Cork, the Institute of Chinese studies UCC, the Confusious Institute, representatives of business and community associates throught the city, City Council staff and UCC staff.

Prof Fan Hong, Irish Institute of Chinese Studies, UCC, also addressed the audience prior to the performance on the “The Significance of the Chinese New Year”

Students from UCC attending their Chinese studies course also sang several musical numbers and they were joined on stage for a photocall with the Lord Mayor and the Ambassador. Cork is twinned with Shanghai since 2005 and the link is now very well established .The event was organised by Cork City Council and UCC.
