John X Miller, Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Donal Counihan, His Excellency, Ferenc Jári, Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to Ireland and John O’Riordan, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Cork City Council.

Speech delivered by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Donal Counihan, at the appointment of John X. Miller as Honorary Consul of Hungary.

"Representatives of the Hungarian Parliament, Teachta Dála, Diplomatic and Consular Representatives to Ireland, Members of the European Parliament, Members and Management of Cork City Council, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is an honour for me as Lord Mayor of Cork to extend a warm welcome to you all today, especially those of you who have travelled from the Republic of Hungary to be with us here in the Council Chamber, City Hall, Cork for this wonderful occasion. Fáilte díograiseach go Seomra na Comhairle. Halla na Cathrach

I am delighted that John X. Miller is being appointed as Honorary Consul of Hungary in the city of Cork with jurisdiction over the counties of Cork, Limerick, Kerry, Clare, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford and Tipperary.  John X. is a most worthy person for this appointment.  He plays a significant role in the social and cultural life of this city and is well respected by all communities.

John X. Miller’s appointment as Honorary Consul is an acknowledgement of the widening relationship between Hungary and the city of Cork. In 2005 John X. was instrumental in organising the Enlargement! Programme when Cork celebrated its year as European Capital of Culture and for bringing the Hungarian segment of the Enlargement! Project to Cork. He was also responsible for expanding it to a Hungarian Cultural Month in Cork, and you, a country so internationally famous for its contribution to the visual arts, saw fit to recognise this by bestowing the “Pro Cultura Hungarica” Award, the highest Cultural Award of Hungary, on John X. in 2006 .

Increased Tourism, the expansion of business interests, regular cultural exchanges and a notable presence of Hungarians in the local workforce is a reflection of our growing relationship and John X. Miller’s appointment as Honorary Consul can only  promote this growth further. In honouring John you also honour our city and we thank you for the honour and for your presence here today."
