Civic Reception for Cork City FC

The Lord Mayor of Cork , Cllr. Donal Counihan, and Cork City Council yesterday (Thursday January 24th 2008) at 6p.m. hosted a Civic Reception in the Council Chamber, City Hall, Cork for the victorious FAI Ford Cup winners 2007, Cork City FC.

The Lord Mayor congratulated Cork City on their impressive win over Longford Town and praised them for the continuing resurgence of Cork soccer.

“When a team is named after its city of origin, it carries not only the hopes and dreams of its followers but of all residents of that city.  By your victory you have brought pride not only to the legions of Cork City fans but to all residents of the People’s Republic”

The Lord Mayor continued: “I know it is usual to congratulate a team on winning such a prestigious trophy but the truth, as we all know, is that such victories are not won on the day of the game alone but on the cold and wet evenings of training in all sorts of conditions when, as the saying goes, it is neither fashionable or popular. Congratulations to the management and backroom team as well as the players for this wonderful achievement."
