Lord Mayor to ring in the Festive Season

On Sunday 21st December 2008 at 6.45 p.m., the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Brian Bermingham will perform a Christmas Bell Ringing at St Anne’s Shandon to celebrate the festive season. The occasion will also be marked by the singing of Christmas Carols by the Trinity Choir and will be preceded at 6.00 p.m. by a performance of Christmas melodies by The Butter Exchange Brass and Reed Prize Band on the steps of Shandon with members of the public invited to join in.

Speaking in advance of the event Lord Mayor Bermingham explained his reasons for suggesting the event.

“First and foremost, Christmas is a time of remembering so at a time close to but not encroaching on the celebration I felt it was appropriate to recognize the importance to the city of the holiday in an official way. It also struck me that there was no better way to do this than from the most recognizable and familiar public building in the city.”

“I hope the public will join in the spirit of the event and come to Shandon to join in the festivities. I also hope it may be the start of a new tradition in the city that the First Citizen lead the people of Cork in a public celebration” he added.

The event will be followed at 7.30 p.m. by an ecumenical service at St Anne’s.
