Lord Mayor sends message of solidarity to Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan

The Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Brian Bermingham today (Tuesday August 5th 2008) sent messages of solidarity to the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the upcoming anniversaries of the Atomic bombing of both cities in August 1945.

Text of letter follows:

Dear Mayor

At all times, but particularly during this period August 6th through August 9th, our thoughts are with you. The names of your cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are embedded in our collective thoughts more than any other city in Japan or in the world. These names stand for the massive destructiveness of nuclear weapons and for the strength of human spirit needed to overcome such destructiveness.

The key to humanity’s future runs through Hiroshima and Nagasaki’s past. Such events must never be allowed to happen again.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Brian Bermingham,
Lord Mayor of Cork,
Ireland.
