The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Donal Counihan and Cork City Council hosted a Civic Reception on Monday, 3rd December 2007 in the Council Chamber, City Hall, Cork to honour Cork’s Special Olympics athletes on their recent success at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.

Addressing the audience, the Lord Mayor congratulated the athletes on their success and the honour they had brought to the city:  “I met most of you before you departed on your Chinese adventure. At that time I reminded you of the honour you had already brought to yourselves, your family and the city simply by being chosen to represent us. Given the wonderful success you enjoyed in Shanghai and the huge haul of medals you bring with you today, I can tell you took the message and the challenge to heart”

The Lord Mayor also paid tribute to the host city for the games, Shanghai, with whom Cork City was twinned in 2005: “I was struck by the genuine warmth in our sister city to all Olympians.  It was clear from the first view of the city that the City Fathers and all citizens were enthusiastic and supportive of the event and were genuinely committed to ensuring its success.”

The Lord Mayor concluded by wishing the athletes well in their preparations for the next Summer Games which will take place in Athens, Greece in 2011 and expressed a wish that whoever is Lord Mayor at that time would similarly welcome home a successful delegation.
